Indian stock markets witnessed a sharp decline on Wednesday as benchmark indices traded in the red amid global uncertainty. BSE Sensex dropped more than 600β700 points, while NIFTY 50 slipped below the 24,100 level, moving closer to the important 24,000 mark.
The markets had opened on a flat note due to mixed global cues, but selling pressure increased during the session, mainly due to geopolitical tensions related to the ongoing conflict between Iran and the US-Israel alliance.
π Auto, Banking, and IT Stocks Drag the Market
Sectoral indices showed a mixed but negative trend. Major sectors such as Auto, Banking, Financial Services, FMCG, IT, and Private Banks traded lower, putting pressure on the overall market sentiment.
However, some sectors managed to stay positive. Media, Metals, Pharma, Realty, and Midcap stocks showed gains, indicating that investors are selectively shifting towards defensive and commodity-linked sectors.
π Global Markets Show Mixed Signals
Global markets presented a mixed outlook. Futures linked to the S&P 500 rose 0.5%, suggesting some optimism in the US markets.
In Asia, TOPIX gained 1.7%, while S&P/ASX 200 advanced 0.4%. Meanwhile, the Hang Seng Index edged 0.3% higher, whereas the Shanghai Composite slipped slightly by 0.1%.
These mixed global cues continued to influence investor sentiment in the Indian markets.
