Why Is the Stock Market Closed Today? Will It Open Tomorrow on Holi?

Indian stock exchanges are closed today (March 3) on account of the Holi festival, leading to some confusion among traders about the exact holiday schedule.

Both the National Stock Exchange of India (NSE) and the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) have declared a full trading holiday. There is no trading activity in equity, derivatives, or securities lending and borrowing (SLB) segments today.

What About Commodity Markets?

The Multi-Commodity Exchange of India (MCX) will remain closed for the morning session (9:00 AM to 5:00 PM) but will reopen for the evening session from 5:00 PM to 11:55 PM.

However, the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange (NCDEX) will stay closed for the entire day.

Why Is There Confusion?

This year, Holika Dahan was observed late on March 2, while several states will celebrate Holi on March 4. Because of this variation in regional celebrations, many traders questioned why the market holiday falls on March 3.

Stock exchange holidays are pre-decided as per the official annual holiday calendar, which does not always align exactly with regional celebration dates.

Will the Market Open Tomorrow?

Yes. Trading on NSE and BSE will resume on Wednesday (March 4), when many parts of the country celebrate Holi.
